What Is Unity?

In 1889, when Charles and Myrtle Fillmore began to publish a new magazine called "Modern Thought", they were bold pioneers in the area of "positive thinking." Today, over 100 years later there is hardly a Christian church in the country that has not adopted some form of "positive thinking" into its theology.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, whose Power of Positive Thinking is known by countless individuals, gave credit to Unity and Charles Fillmore for his inspiration. The Oral Roberts evangelistic group was organized shortly after a visit by a delegation of workers from that group to Unity at Unity Village, Missouri.

Charles and Myrtle Fillmore had no notion nor intention to found a new Christian denomination or a new spiritual movement. This unfolded gradually and took form in unexpected ways, as Truth students left their time at Unity Village and returned home to create study groups where positive, practical teachings came alive for participants.

One of Unity’s basic principles is that God is One, and that no one religion or school of thought has a monopoly on God. Not even Christianity. The Fillmores were Truth students, inspired and dedicated to the teachings of our Way Shower and Elder Brother, Jesus Christ. Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, co-founders of this growing spiritual movement, believed that the Bible formed a rich basis for a living faith. Its teachings are applicable on many different levels, including those we call metaphysics and spiritual consciousness.

There are no creeds or dogmas that one has to profess to feel comfortable in a Unity church. Members and friends are encouraged to keep an open mind and think for themselves. There are Spiritual Principles that have been passed down through the ages. When we align ourselves with these Principles we find greater health, prosperity, happiness and peace of mind.

5 Basic Unity Principles

1. God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.

2. I am naturally good because God's Divinity is in me and in everyone.

3. I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe.

4. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.

5. I do and give my best by living the Truth I know. I make a difference!
